Samuel Sylvester Steenbergen

January 16, 1935 ~ November 2, 2018 (age 83)

Samuel S. Steenbergen, 83, of Urbana passed away at 12:03 p.m. on Friday, November 2, 2018 at his home, surrounded by family.

Cremation rites will be accorded and a Visitation will be held from 3:00-4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel & Crematory. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. following the visitation. Military rites will be performed by the American Legion Post 71 and the IL Army National Guard.

Sam was born on January, 16, 1935 in Delong, IN to parents Marcus H. and Lily Mae (Croutcher) Steenbergen, they preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were a great granddaughter and eight siblings.

On June 1, 1957 he married Betty L. Minder in South Bend, IN, she survives. Also surviving are their children; Debra (Dave) Keller of LaPorte, IN, Mary (Lou) Due of Champaign and Samuel (Kelly) Steenbergen of Fisher. His brother Jeff (Anita) Steenbergen of Seal Beach, CA, nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren also survive him.

Sam was a veteran of the Army Nation Guard. He worked for Frito Lay, retiring after 28 years. After retirement Sam went to work for the Champaign Urbana MTD where he worked for 25 years. He worked until he was 80 years old.

Sam and Betty loved Cracker Barrel and ate breakfast there every morning, sometimes arriving before they even opened. He was an avid bowler, even volunteering his time to coach the youth teams. Sam enjoyed carpentry work and rooting for the Chicago Cubs. The most important thing in Sam’s life was his family and they could always count on him to be there for them no matter what. He is going to be missed by all who loved him.
